Texture Mapping - Visual Design 14/15 (Session 4)

In this session we were given the texture sheet and full model of a woman and were given the task to edit her jacket and then make her look like a zombie.
I used my own logo for the image on the back of her jacket and a pattern texture for the detail on the actual jacket. Below are the images of the texture sheet and then that sheet wrapped around the model in Maya.

Futuristic Gun Homework - Visual Design 14/15

In this task my aim was to design a gun that would not fire lasers or projectiles. It had to have a traditional style. So I decided to design a sub machine gun as this was my favourite from my Xbox days. Below you can see, In order my mood board. sketches and my final design. Although my final design does have a laser, this is purely a laser sight for improved aim. In my opinion most guns are usually a boring colour, I decided to change this. Maroon all the way!

Crustacean Silhouette (Feng Zhu) - Visual Design 14/15 (Session 3)

In session 3 we had the task to create silhouette crustaceans in the style of Feng Zhu. It was an interesting way of working. Simple and quick but still effective.

Minni Maan (One Sheet & Mock Level) - Games Encounters 14/15

The other week we were given the task to come up with an idea for a simple game that must contain no more than 3 minutes of gameplay, but 3 triggered events have to happen. This will teach me the basic elements of game design using C# in the Unity Engine. I won't go into much detail in this post as the one sheet tells you the idea of the game.
This is the one sheet for 'Minni Maan'

This gives you the basic idea of the game and the level layout that I am going for, I also tried to show the protagonists size in comparison to the average human hand.
Anyway with the layout plan for the house I moved onto modelling it in Maya.

Prybar Homework - Visual Design 14/15

This week we had to create a Prybar in Maya following tutorials on Lynda. The tutorials taught me lots of new shortcuts and tools that I did not know during the fish project.

I'm happy with the result and looking forward to using textures in the next few weeks.

Tentacle Homework - Visual Design 14/15

This week our Visual Design homework was to create something with at least 4 tentacles. I researched into tentacles and found that tentacles are a slender and flexible limb, found especially around the mouth and they act as a sense organ.
I put together a quick mood board to try and get some ideas on what I wanted to sketch. My favourite genre of film is comedy and you only normally see tentacle monsters in thriller films. So I added fruit and plants to the board.
Mood Board
After getting a few ideas from the mood board I started to sketch out a few simple tentacles to get the idea of how they are drawn, I liked the idea of my final piece having a sort of tentacle moustache (similar to the cuttlefish) and I loved the idea of the actual monster being a banana peel.
A few sketches and notes
Once I had my sketches I mixed a few of the ideas into one to create the following drawing. I decided to go with the banana peel as the four tentacles, but I also added the tentacle moustache.

Pencil sketch in Photoshop
After I had finished my sketch I started to work on the line art. This is the first time I have done my own line art so it's not the best, but I think it turned out ok and It can only get better!

Line art over the sketch
I then made a simple palette up of 3 pastel colours so that its easy on the eye and blocked in their general areas.
Basic colours
Following the block colours I added shadows to make it look less flat. I used a 60% grey on a multiply layer as used in our lesson.
Shadows!
I'm still happy with how it is turning out so I continued to carry on and blend a few of the colours together and to also make the shadows less harsh. The picture below is my final piece and I think it looks great!
Bananapus!
That's it! Say hello to my monster, or otherwise known as 'Bananapus'

Alien Caterpillar - Visual Design 14/15 (Session 2)

In our second session of Visual Design we had to paint an Alien Caterpillar in Photoshop with the linework already provided.

This was one of the first times I have painted in Photoshop. I am really happy with the results and I feel I learnt quite a lot in this session.

Here is the Alien after I added the base colours on a Multiply layer:-

After this I added the basic shadows, again on a Multiply layer:-
Lastly and most importantly I started to paid the rest of the Alien with all the different shades of colour. I only managed to get the head and some of the hammer finished in our session. Here it is:-

Robot Homework - Visual Design 14/15

This is my first piece of homework for my visual design sessions. My task was to design my own own robot using traditional art skills.
I started by drawing out some ideas of animals but turning them into a sort of robot form. I liked the nuts and bolt aspect of my sketches and I also liked the sharp edges on my wasp design.
For my final piece I decided to go with an under water animal as I thought this was cool due to metal not actually being a great material when mixed with water.
Due to the water he has new parts and old rusty parts. I'm happy with how this turned out but looking at it now, I do think some of my lines could have been bolder to give the shark more depth.

Fish Homework - Visual Design 14/15

This was my first bit of homework for our Visual Design course.
We were given the task to make a model fish in Maya using tutorials on Lynda.com. This taught me the basic tools and processes of Maya and to get us ready for the next projects.

I am happy with the way it turned out as the project seemed quite tough at first, I look forward to messing around with Maya in the coming weeks.

I call him Clive.
